Discussion event – 15th December – Widening participation in higher education: longitudinal research on the ‘first in family’ student experience and labour market outcomes
Date: December 15, 2021 2:00 pm
Location: United Kingdom
Host: UCL Centre for Longitudinal Studies
Host Contact: ioe.clsevents@ucl.ac.uk
What can we learn from a quantitative analysis on ‘first in family’ university graduates in the UK in relation to labour market outcomes and widening participation in higher education?
Join us for a discussion and presentation of findings from a research programme funded by the Nuffield Foundation and led by Dr Morag Henderson, UCL Centre for Longitudinal Studies.
The project team examined how ‘first in family’ students (those whose parents do not have a degree but who go on to achieve one themselves) navigate the higher education system and the labour market compared to their peers. The project findings have important implications for both social mobility and educational inequality.
Event format
The event includes a presentation of results from the project and a discussion on how the research adds to evidence and thinking on widening participation in higher education. Two ‘first in family’ students will speak candidly of their experiences, and we will hear from experts from both policy and the research community.
Who should attend?
This event will be of particular interest to:
• practitioners and policymakers interested in university access and the outcomes of disadvantaged students
• academics, including researchers of educational inequality, educational transitions
• university staff involved in widening participation strategies
• career advisors
• graduate employers
• students with an interest in social science and education
• Third sector organisations relating to inequality and social mobility
About the research project
This Nuffield Foundation funded project entitled: ‘First in family’: higher education choices and labour market outcomes aimed to document the differences between ‘first in family’ students and students whose parents have a degree.
Educational attainment gaps by socioeconomic background have narrowed in Britain since the 1980s, driven in part by the expansion of higher education. Despite this overall expansion, there is evidence of horizontal stratification, where disadvantaged students are less likely to access top universities and study for high-status subjects. Thus, an educational advantage for those from more advantaged backgrounds is maintained, raising important questions about social justice and widening participation.
In this research project, the team used secondary data from the Centre for Longitudinal Studies to explore the following research questions:
• Do ‘first in family’ young people have different experiences at university in terms of institution attended, subject studied, and probability of dropout?
• How does the ‘first in family’ measure compare to other widening participation indicators?
• Are there differences by ‘first in family’ status on the graduate labour market in terms of working hours and labour market returns compared to peers whose parents had graduated?
• Are there any substantive differences in non-cognitive skills such as locus of control, academic self-concept, work ethic and self-esteem of the potential ‘first in family’ students?
• Has the proportion of potential ‘first in family’ students changed among the younger generation and across the home nations?

Law for All: Widening Access to Legal Education in the UK and Ireland – 17th November
Date: November 17, 2021 9:00 am
Location: Online
Host: Queens University, Belfast
Host Contact: a.godden@qub.ac.uk
The global community has committed itself to widening access to higher education in Goal 4 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Nationally, the UK government, the devolved nations and the Republic of Ireland have responded by putting in place strategies to facilitate the widening participation agenda. Likewise, across these islands an increasing number of universities have created outreach programmes in a great variety of formats, and much research is now being conducted on the themes of education, participation, representation and equity. All of these initiatives are united by the aim of breaking down the barriers – actual and perceived – which for decades have deterred people from deprived and/or underrepresented backgrounds from enjoying the social and economic benefits of a university education.
To date, however, comparatively little discussion has taken place on the theme of widening access to legal education. That is so despite the fact that, for too many people in the 21st century, the perception remains entrenched that legal education and training are ‘open to all – like the Ritz Hotel’ (to borrow from Sir James Matthew). The aim of this workshop is to bring together educators, researchers and practitioners from across the UK and Ireland to consider how the legal community can rise to the challenge of reaching out to students from non-traditional backgrounds, dispel outdated perceptions of elitism and exclusion, and make the law more attractive to those who are the ‘most able but least likely’ to study it. This is a vital endeavour since, ultimately, it is only by creating a more diverse student body that the profession can become truly reflective of the society that it serves.
With funding from the Society of Legal Scholars, the workshop will comprise two panels of invited speakers and will be open to all interested parties to attend and contribute: 1) an educational panel, made up of lecturers and curriculum managers from law schools and vocational training providers; and 2) a professional panel, comprised of representatives from the governing bodies of the legal profession in the UK and Ireland. Together, the panels will provide a public forum for discussion of core topics, with particular emphasis on: 1) the difficulties that come with trying to attract students from the most challenging backgrounds into legal study; 2) the ways in which academic and professional bodies can work together to facilitate better transitions from study to practice; and 3) examples of successful interventions in the form of outreach programmes, transition support measures and partnership arrangements. These conversations will be disseminated in a policy report, which will contain recommendations for all providers of legal education across these islands (academic and vocational) to promote a more consistent approach to the widening participation agenda, by raising awareness of common problems and providing examples of institutional best practice.
UCD University for All Seminar 3: From Consultation to Collaboration: The Student Role in Creating a University for All – 17th November
Date: November 17, 2021 12:00 pm
Host: Daniel Elliott, University College Dublin
Host Contact: daniel.elliott@ucd.ie
This seminar will illustrate how UCD embraces this well-rehearsed statement and accepts the student challenge. The seminar will outline how students have shaped the Access agenda and challenged assumptions. We will outline how students have disrupted our thinking and reshaped how we include all students in our university. As an illustration of this, students now have a central role in our University for All implementation.
You will hear a number of examples of students as agents of change in the university and we will explore how the role of students has evolved as widening participation in higher education has moved beyond opening doors to enacting systemic change in every aspect of our university. You will learn about how access professionals must create a culture of innovation and creativity to be proactive, rather than reactive, to student challenges, enabling students to be autonomous, independent, effective learners. We will highlight:
The process of developing policy and practice based on evolving student experiences and feedback to positively change institutional culture.
The catalyst for a number of our programmes and their evolution to empower students and meet their changing needs including the UCD Access Student Leader programme, UCD Digital Ambassadors and our Welcome to Inclusive UCD orientation module for all incoming students.
The role of the Students’ Union to empower all students, including access students.
