Speaking Out/Speaking up

University of Sussex

28th November 2018

As part of World Access to Higher Education Day, the University of Sussex has organised an attainment raising day for Widening Participation GCSE students that develops student confidence in participation in spoken English.

In the session, groups practice parts of famous speeches, from Obama’s inauguration speech to Romeo and Juliet’s prologue.

This session will involve:

  • Using ‘before and after’ technique (using mobile devices to self-record speeches)
  • In-between, coaching exercises which will enable students to add actions in order to help them animate the speech
  • Advice on scaling back to small, memorable gestures which help add inflection and emphasis to the details in language

The session also provides sentence stems which students can use to help them speak up in seminars, and articulate themselves in presentations.
